Photography, Wellbeing and the Environmental Crisis
Online workshop: Monday 21st September 6.30-7.30 pm
We are bombarded with negative imagery in our news media about the environment, which can have a considerable negative effect on our wellbeing. Can images of a more positive future help us? If so, what kind of imagery?
In this workshop we explore photographic messaging about environmental change, including climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution..
Through this workshop, photographer and Well Image founder, Vanessa Miles, will present a series of images and lead a discussion on what makes a positive environmental photograph.
How can we make our images meaningful?
Participants are encouraged to send in an image of their own for possible inclusion in the discussion.
We will be exploration ways photographers have presented the environment and discuss how to make the narrative a more positive one.

Vanessa Miles is a photographer who set up the UK’s first independent picture library specialising in environmental images in 1989. At that time there was a sudden high demand for images with an ‘environmental lens’. The picture library supplied images to the national and international press and book publishers. Photographs had to be sourced as demand for images far outstripped supply. Vanessa has had her own images published extensively on a wide range of environmental issues in the national media. She has worked for Greenpeace and The Woodland Trust. She focused her MA in Photography on positive images of people engaging with the environment.
Her work can be seen here: www.vanessamiles.com. Vanessa currently runs a social enterprise,Well Image CIC, using photography as a catalyst to enhance wellbeing.
